We've looked at the human origins of media technology in how materials mined and manufactured, and we've speculated about the future by learning about some of the challenges of e-waste recycling. Today, we turn our attention to the present.

E-waste! It's the future. And as memory and processing becomes cheaper, devices have shorter and shorter life spans, which means that we produce more and more ewaste every year, an estimated 50 million tons.

Where does it all go?

Yesterday you learned about the origins of the minerals that go into many of our devices and you played a game that introduced some of the human rights abuses that take place at each of four stages in an electronic device's life. Today, we'll look at the labor that goes into their manufacturing by considering the story of Mike Daisey.

The first week of this class is coming to an end, so here's a review of all of the things you should have completed by now.

We're nearing the end of the first week of this class. Your working hard on the tasks you've chosen for your "Digital Creativity" module, so for the final day of new material for the week, I want to take a unified look at digital creativity in some different manifestations.
